FAQs

Firstly, we source from farmers across fertile belts of South India and we know these farmers and value the fact that they prioritize rice and lentil harvesting with soil preservation as a focus. They use bio-pesticides over harsh chemical pesticides. So you can be assured that the produce generated is genuinely good for you, pure and safe for your family!Β

Our A2 ghee is made in small batches in our Founder Sarasswathi's kitchen from native cows reared in her family farm. The cows are fed with high quality fodder from the farm itself! Their urine (turned into jeevamrutham)Β  is used as a soil booster in the farm. The cows are free from unnecessary antibiotics. The calves’ milk feed are prioritized. The emphasis on circular practices is really special. And as a by-product, the level of affection and care for these special native cow breeds reflect in the product quality. Our ghee is loved by our customers and we see great repeat orders here!Β

The ground-nut, coconut and sesame oil are sourced from farmers who wood-press it to preserve the nutrients. This selection of oils ensure you have most of these key kitchen staple oils to meet multi-cuisine food prep in your kitchen for all times of the year. And let’s not forget, each oil has a unique nutritional offering including benefits such as being vitamin E rich, gut-friendly andΒ  anti-oxidant rich.

Our rices can be stored in a cool, dry place in the ziplock packaging itself. Ideally rices should be stored in an air-tight container. We’re fans of traditional stainless steel rice jars, glass jars with secure lids. Or food-grade bins.Β

We believe in eating foods fresh from nature coming to you from farms that use toxins and of course, keeping processed foods to the minimum! On a daily basis, we’d suggest buying fresh local vegetables in season. Foods like A2 ghee while being healthy fats are in fact anti-inflammatory for the gut and lighter on the digestion. Other anti-inflammatory whole-foods we love are moringa powder (seemingly bland, but full of creative recipe potential!).Β

Supplements and medicines exist. Stress management in modern life is a must! These apart, at risk of sounding like a broken record, we’re going to take you back to the basics. Eating certain nutrient dense, anti-oxidant-rich foods such as Moringa powder aids immunity naturally. Did you know that oils like sesame oil and ground-nut oil are also anti-oxidant rich? Turns out, what’s part of ancient wisdom in culinary traditions is more relevant today than ever! And Karupu Kavuni (Black rice) is so anti-oxidant rich, having more anthocyanins than even blueberries! The answers are often nearer to us and purer and simpler than we imagine! But it does take consistent consumption and commitment to eating healthy and focusing on wellness inside-out!

If you’re a busy-bee like most today, can we suggest a combo-pack that makes this easy for you? You could give our plant-protein pack a tryΒ

If you are vegetarian or vegan, we’d suggest a diet rich in lentils, legumes, pulses and select rices such as Maapilai Samba, Karupu Kavuni, Vellai-Ponni,Β Seeraga Samba rices. These tend to have 8-10 gm of protein per 100gm servings apart from being nutritionally diverse.

Again, naturally available foods such as spinach and leafy-green vegetables are rich in iron.Β

We provide Moringa powder, Karupu Kavuni rice, Moong Dal, Maapilai Samba Rice, Seeraga Samba Rice and Thooyamali which also are great daily iron sources.Β

If you eat meat or eggs, these are also iron sources.Β

Seeds, cane jaggery and dates are also some natural treats which are iron sources.

Biopesticides are pest-control substances that come from natural sources rather than being fully synthetic chemicals.

They usually fall into three broad buckets:

  • Plant based

Examples:Β

  • Neem (Azadirachtin) – repels insects, disrupts their growth and reproduction
  • Garlic, chilli, ginger extracts – act as repellents or antifeedants
  • Pyrethrum (from chrysanthemum flowers) – knocks down insects quickly

These work by:

  • Repelling pests
  • Stopping feeding
  • Interfering with insect life cycles

  • Microbial

Examples:

  • Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) – bacteria that kill caterpillars when ingested
  • Beauveria bassiana – fungus that infects insects
  • Trichoderma – controls soil-borne fungal diseases

Key point: they are very targeted, often affecting only one type of pest.

  • Natural minerals

Examples:

  • Sulphur – controls fungal diseases
  • Diatomaceous earth – damages insect exoskeletons
  • Kaolin clay – forms a physical barrier on plants

At Earth Sense Farms, a combination of plant-based and microbial are favoured and work wonders for us. Here’s ourΒ  secret sauce πŸ™‚Β

Plant based

  • Neem oil, Pongam oil.Β
  • 3G Solution – Extract of chilli, garlic & ginger.Β

Microbial

Verticillium lecanii, Metarhizium, Beauveria bassiana, Paecilomyces, Trichoderma viridi, Pseudomonas and Manure (Decomposed farm yard manure, vermicompost, panchakavya, jeevamrutham)Β

Oh yes!! This is the cornerstone of why Sarasswathi started this venture and how we operate. It is extremely important to us to know who we source from, their ethos regarding agri-practices and what they do to ensure soil regenerative practices while farming. It is our honour to know our farmers and we respect their knowledge of their domain. It is equally science, art and craft, the way they harvest, cultivate and operate! One of our Thiruvannamalai farmers is so eloquent, he can give an entire TED talk on heirloom rice, their cultivation cycle and nutritional value.Β

Similarly, our Thiruvallur farm team can conduct seminars on how to care for cows, how to use what is available to enrich soil, and how to optimise a piece of land to grow what’s local (like local vegetable varieties in season) while also being business minded and utilising large tracts of available land to operate a lovely nursery business that is a hybrid of grown plants plus sourced plants. FYI - the nursery venture does commercial and residential projects (in case you want to make your space, factory or building greener and the air cleaner :)Β

Being certified organic is a formal documentation process that we are working towards. As an SMB agri focused social venture,Β it is our eventual goal to achieve this along with our third party farm sources. However it is important to understand that while official documentation is a priority,Β we believe real change begins with responsible farming practices. In India and in the west,Β  to get certified as organic, it is a multi-year process that involves frequent audits of neighbouring soil, land history, historic soil residues, historical soil input documentation etc. Until we achieve our goal, we relentlessly put into practice farming methods that help us eat the foods we generate peacefully, knowing we’ve done whatever we can to do right by our sources, the land and provide naturally wholesome and non-toxic food to you, our patrons!Β

We do not claim β€œorganic” in our marketing despite us practicing farming methods that utilise natural, regenerative, circular methods that deploy the types of bio pesticides mentioned in question 11 since we are not yet officially certified.Β

Our rices, lentils, moringa powder, A2 ghee and wood-pressed oils are shipped pan India. Our vegetables are supplied only to Chennai due to short shelf life
